PREFACE

UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) was set up by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in pursuance of the Economic and Social Council resolution 715 A (XXVII) of 23 April 1959. Under this resolution, it had the following terms of reference:

  • to consider the technical problems of domestic standardization of geographical names, including the preparation of a statement of the general and regional problems involved, and to prepare draft recommendations for the procedures, principally linguistic, that might be followed in the standardization of their own names by individual countries; and

  • to report to the Council at an appropriate session on the desirability of holding an international conference on this subject and of sponsoring working groups based on linguistic systems;

  • to invite Governments of countries interested and experienced in the question to make available, at the request of the Secretary-General, and at their own expense, consultants to serve on the above group.

 

The 16th UNGEGN ASIA SOUTH-EAST and PACIFIC SOUTH-WEST DIVISIONAL MEETING - August 4th, 2009

The implementing of these events is a series of activities on the 40th anniversary of the National Coordination Agency for Surveys and Mapping (BAKOSURTANAL), which are consisted of such exhibition, meetings, and conferences. One of them is the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Asia South-East and Pacific South-West Division.

Since 2006, until to date, the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Asia South-East and Pacific South West Division was chaired by the Head of BAKOSURTANAL, which is as a result of the 13th Meeting of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Asia South-East and Pacific South West Division which was held in Indonesia, 24-25 August 2009, concurrently with the International Geo-spatial Technology Exhibition.

The 15th United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Asia South-East and Pacific South West Division Meeting also was conducted in Jakarta on 24-25 November 2008, at this meeting agreed that the forthcoming 16th Meeting of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Asia South-East and Pacific South West Division will be held in Bali on 4 August, and on 5 August to be continued by one-day International Symposium on Geographical Names.

The island of Bali is part of the Republic of Indonesia and is located 8 to 9 degrees south of the equator between Java in the West and Lombok and the rest of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and Timor) in the East. Flying time to Jakarta is about 1.5 hours, to Singapore and Perth (Australia) 2.5 and 3 hours, to Hong Kong about 4.5 hours, and to Sydney/Melbourne about 5.5 to 6 hours.

Don't look for "Bali" in airline time tables. It's listed as "Denpasar" (DPS) which is the name of the island's capital. However, from Bali's international Ngurah Rai Airport it takes you just 15 to 30 minutes by car to Kuta, Legian, Sanur and Nusa Dua, and in about 50 to 60 minutes you can be in Ubud.
